Neuronal Self-Organization of Motion Percepts

چکیده
Zusammenfassung A neural network which models multi-stable perception is presented. The network consists of sensor and inner neurons. The dynamics is established by a stochastic neuronal dynamics, a formal Hebb-type coupling dynamics and a resource mechanism that corresponds to saturation eeects in perception. From this a system of coupled diierential equations is derived and analyzed. Single stimuli are bound to exactly one percept, even in ambiguous situations where multi-stability occurs. The network exhibits discontinuous as well as continuous phase transitions and models various empirical ndings, including the percepts of succession, alternative motion and simultaneity; while the percept of oscillation is explained by oscillating percepts at a continuous phase transition.

Motion perception during self- motion: The direct versus inferential controversy revisited
According to the traditional inferential theory of perception, percepts of object motion or stationarity stem from an evaluation of afferent retinal signals (which encode image motion) with the help of extraretinal signals (which encode eye movements). According to direct perception theory, on the other hand, the percepts derive from retinally conveyed information only. Neither view is compatib...
متن کاملNeural Field Dynamics for Motion Perception
In this paper we present a model for the perception of apparent motion based on dynamic neural elds. We show that both, the organization of percepts and their speci c dynamical properties can be derived from the same perceptual dynamics. We show that neural elds adequately formalize this perceptual dynamics. This leads to a model that is su cient in the sense that it reproduces correctly the pe...
متن کاملConstructive perception of self-motion.
This review focusses attention on a ragged edge of our knowledge of self-motion perception, where understanding ends but there are experimental results to indicate that present approaches to analysis are inadequate. Although self-motion perception displays processes of "top-down" construction, it is typically analyzed as if it is nothing more than a deformation of the stimulus, using a "bottom-...
متن کاملThe perceived motion of a stereokinetic stimulus
An ellipse rotating in the image plane can produce several different percepts. The two-dimensional (2D) percepts are either a rotating rigid ellipse or a constantly deforming non-rigid ellipse. The 3D percept is a rotating rigid circular disk that is tilted relative to the image plane. Stimuli that generate 3D percepts based on purely 2D rotational motion are known as stereokinetic stimuli. We ...
متن کاملExperience-Driven Plasticity in Binocular Vision
Experience-driven neuronal plasticity allows the brain to adapt its functional connectivity to recent sensory input. Here we use binocular rivalry, an experimental paradigm in which conflicting images are presented to the individual eyes, to demonstrate plasticity in the neuronal mechanisms that convert visual information from two separated retinas into single perceptual experiences. Perception...
